Oscar winning Production Designer, Shona Heath (Poor Things, 2023) made her Directorial and AI debut with the stunning OOH film, Glass Hermit, commissioned by HPC and AI data centre specialists, Northern Data.
Launching their ‘Innovation Bravery’ campaign, the film played in 3 global locations including a 23 screen, 60 min takeover in Time Square, NYC.
Shona is renowned for her hands on, traditional creative approach which is heavily embedded in fine art, craft and physical model making so the introduction of AI in her process had to be carefully managed so not to disrupt but augment her work.

Working closely with Motion Graphics studio, Blind Pig, we designed a unique VFX pipeline that gave Shona the freedom to experiment and discover AI in all its weirdness whilst making sure it was complimentary to Shona’s aesthetic and story.
The VFX+AI pipeline evolved daily, enabling us to combine traditional post-production tools with cutting edge gen AI. There wasn’t an instruction manual for what we wanted to do – every day was an experiment for us just as much as it was for Shona and Northern Data.

“AI has opened a door to other dimensions. It makes sense to me to use it in conjunction with my original ideas, the hand made and human crafted. It is like another colour.”
